PMS/PMDD

What is PMS/PMDD?

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) refers to the physical and behavioral symptoms that occur in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, which is the period after ovulation and before menstruation begins, due to hormonal changes. PMS typically resolves once menstruation begins and symptoms include mood swings, irritability, anxiety, and more.

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a severe and sometimes disabling set of emotional and physical symptoms that occur during the luteal phase of a female’s menstrual cycle and similarly to PMS, symptoms typically improve once menstruation starts. It is different from PMS in its increased severity and impact on a woman’s work and social relationships.
