DUTCH: What inspired you to become a healthcare practitioner?

Dr. Mary Pardee: My own health story is what brought me to become a specialist in gut health and hormones. I had gut issues my entire life. Even as a little girl I had abdominal migraines, bloating, terrible reflux, irregular bowel movements, and my stomach always bothered me. The only solutions conventional medicine offered me were medications that caused nausea or would work for a little while and then my symptoms would come right back.  I eventually went to a gastroenterologist who finally told me there was no answer for me. He said all of my labs and imaging reports were normal, and I was just going to have to live with it.

I left the appointment crying.

It was not until I discovered naturopathic medicine that I started to heal my own gut. And because of this I have made it my mission to provide knowledge and guidance to other people who have been told they would just have to live with their symptoms.

DUTCH: What is your training?

Dr. Mary Pardee: I’m a practicing  Naturopathic Medical Doctor and a certified Functional Medicine Doctor through the Institute of Functional Medicine.

DUTCH: Describe your medical background/practice.

Dr. Mary Pardee: I am the founder of modrn med, a virtual telehealth company based out of Los Angeles, California. We use the best of naturopathic, functional, and conventional medicine to fix patients’ gut issues and hormone imbalances.

DUTCH: What other functional testing do you use in your practice?

Dr. Mary Pardee: We offer comprehensive, anti-aging blood work as well as advanced, gut-health testing to get to the root of symptoms and prevent diseases from occurring.

DUTCH: How have you incorporated DUTCH Testing into your practice?

Dr. Mary Pardee: The DUTCH Test® is our go-to hormone test at modrn med. We use it to identify hormone imbalances in both men and women. We also use DUTCH testing preventatively, to help identify if men or women are metabolizing estrogens down a more problematic pathway. We use  DUTCH to empower patients to make a health shift with diet, exercise, and supplemental nutrition.

DUTCH: What are the changes you have seen in your patients and practice since incorporating the DUTCH Test®?

Dr. Mary Pardee: It gives us objective data we can use to target hormone balancing therapies to individual patient biochemistry so we don’t have to just guess what is going on, based on symptoms alone.

DUTCH: Where do you see functional/integrative medicine twenty years from now?

Dr. Mary Pardee: Functional medicine is the future of medicine. It seeks to identify and address the root causes of disease, and it views the body as one integrated system, not a collection of independent organs, divided up by medical specialties. FM treats the whole system, not just the symptoms. It is the medicine of why; “why do you have short cycles?” and “why do you have acne?” instead of just treating the symptoms and waiting for something else to pop up later down the road because the root cause was never addressed.

DUTCH: What do you like to do outside of work?

Dr. Mary Pardee: I live in sunny So-Cal because I love being outside. I love hiking, rollerblading, and finding adventures. I also love food! Eating out at healthy foodie spots is my jam.
