Provider Spotlight: Joyce E Gibb, MS, CRNP

After working in family practice, urgent care, and even ambulance and helicopter emergency transport, Joyce narrowed her scope of interests and has spent the last 15 years working exclusively in functional health and integrative medicine. Five years ago, Joyce began working in partnership with Joe DiMatteo. Together, they helped patients get to the root causes of health challenges by taking a whole-person approach: body, mind and spirit.

DUTCH: What inspired you to become a healthcare practitioner?

Joyce Gibb, MS, CRNP: I have always wanted to help others truly get well and therefore I switched from conventional Family Practice to Functional Medicine. We are whole when body, mind and spirit are one.

DUTCH: What is your training?

Joyce Gibb, MS, CRNP: My first bachelor’s degree was in Physical Education and Special Education. From there I obtained an AAS and BS in Respiratory Therapy when my sister was involved in a severe car collision. I was working on Nationwide Children’s Transport Team in Columbus when I decided to get my Bachelor’s in Nursing at Otterbein College. A few years later I decided to pursue my Master’s in Science, Family Nurse Practitioner at Wright State University. I am currently getting Certified through IFM in Functional Medicine.

DUTCH: Describe your medical background/ practice?

Joyce Gibb, MS, CRNP: I have always wanted to treat the root cause of disease instead of a “pill for the ill.” The Integrative Wellness Center was founded by Joe DiMatteo, ND, CCN, RPh several years ago. He hired me in 2013. He was my mentor, boss, best friend and brother in Christ. Joe knew Mark Newman through saliva testing. We switched to DUTCH testing several years ago and found the information provided was much more comprehensive. Sadly, Joe passed away in 2017 of medical mistakes during a surgery. His legacy lives on through us, trying to help others and his radio show on Sirius 131 from 3-4pm daily on Health Talk. We have a compounding pharmacy in addition to a regular pharmacy. I use DUTCH testing for bioidentical hormone treatment and adrenal testing in addition to OATS testing to help target my treatment plans. I treat patients to assist them in regaining their health in many areas.

DUTCH: What other functional testing do you use in your practice?

Joyce Gibb, MS, CRNP: We also do some Genova Stool, Detox, and ZRT testing in addition to serum lab testing. I also use BEMER sessions to aid in many health concerns.

DUTCH: How have you incorporated DUTCH Testing into your practice?

Joyce Gibb, MS, CRNP: Many men and women come here for HRT but before I prescribe this for them, they do a DUTCH test to see their hormone levels. From there, after a comprehensive health assessment, together the patient and I decide what doses to use and how we will follow-up after starting the hormones. I also do the DUTCH Complete many times to assess the patient’s adrenal function or dysfunction.

DUTCH: What are the changes you have seen in your patients and practice since incorporating the DUTCH Test?

Joyce Gibb, MS, CRNP: Since incorporating DUTCH testing, I can better gauge what doses to implement bioidentical hormone levels and what nutraceuticals to aid in adrenal repair.

DUTCH: Where do you see functional/ integrative medicine 20 years from now?

Joyce Gibb, MS, CRNP: Functional/Integrative Medicine will be the norm in 20 years. People are tired of not getting well with a “one treatment fits all” plan with conventional medicine. Insurance companies will also pay for this soon.

DUTCH: What do you like to do outside of work?

Joyce Gibb, MS, CRNP: Outside of work, I like to work out to keep myself healthy by working out at Inner Strength. I am involved in my church, doing mission work in the community. I also enjoy hiking and watching the Pittsburgh Penguins. I have two grown daughters that I love and am involved in their lives.
