DUTCH: What is your training?

Brie Wieselman: I’m a licensed Acupuncturist in California, which allows me to be a primary care provider. During and after my medical education, I also studied functional medicine through a variety of avenues— initially in continuing education courses such as the ones offered by Datis Kharrazian, PhD, DHSc, DC, MS, MMSc, FACN and Apex Energetics, and then through the Institute for Functional Medicine, the Kalish Institute, and various other Functional Medicine post-grad educational programs.

DUTCH: Describe your medical background/ practice?

Brie Wieselman: Prior to running my online clinic (we are now 3 clinicians, a nutritionist/health coach/fitness trainer, and a host of other staff), I ran a brick-and-mortar integrative clinic in Santa Cruz. I have also spent 2 years working in an IVF clinic where I specialized in the integrative treatment for fertility, and specialized in the integrative treatment of Hepatitis C, in my earlier career.

DUTCH: What other functional testing do you use in your practice?

Brie Wieselman: While the DUTCH complete hormone profiles are the #1 test I run on every single client, my other favorites include the GI-Map by Diagnostic Solutions, and the Organix or ION profile by Genova Diagnostic. These are 3 labs that every person should run for general well-being (and, as the initial investigation into any health issue!).  Depending on the unique patient situation, we also utilize SIBO breath testing (lactulose and glucose), the FIT test or Cyrex Testing for immunological food reactions, testing for Epstein-Barre, Lyme (Armin Labs), and Mold Toxicity (Great Plains Myco-tox), as well as general blood chemistry markers from LabCorp.

DUTCH: How have you incorporated DUTCH Testing into your practice?

Brie Wieselman: Since I started using the DUTCH test around 4 years ago, my treatment of hormonal issues (ranging from HPA Axis/Adrenal dysregulation, to reproductive hormone imbalances, to thyroid disorders) have been revolutionized.  The testing I utilized prior to the DUTCH was the best available at the time, but the new advances provided by Mark Newman and his team have given us much more insight into the nuances that make us individual, and that make-or-break personalized protocols. Using protocols designed based on the DUTCH results, clients often tell me that:

  • Energy levels improve
  • Mental clarity increases
  • Immune function optimizes
  • Female hormone symptoms become a thing of the past
  • We find and treat previously undetected thyroid issues (that were often previously mistaken for adrenal issues!)
  • We get much better results when treating digestive infections and disorders, as well as autoimmune conditions

DUTCH: Where do you see functional/ integrative medicine 20 years from now?

Brie Wieselman: I believe that 20 years from now, Functional Medicine will be a part of every hospital and medical practice, alongside the allopathic tools that we do need, in certain cases. There is certainly a best of both worlds to be had, and it is already beginning to happen. The evidence for effective, safe, holistic treatment is indisputable. Not only in the research–Just ask the patients who opt to utilize it!

DUTCH: What do you like to do outside of work

Brie Wieselman: When I’m not working with my clients and managing my team, I am dancing (mainly Brazilian and dances of the African diaspora), taking barre or Pilates classes, going for hikes in the gorgeous Santa Cruz hills, or spending time with my husband and our amazing community, down at the beautiful Santa Cruz beaches.  (We are also blessed to have our first little one on the way!).
