Looking at the Data for Salivary E2 Baseline Testing

There has long been confusion about how to best monitor hormones, but especially creams and gels put on the skin. As this video series will explain, saliva results respond exponentially higher than serum (blood) or urine when a hormone is applied to the skin via a cream or gel. In the Functional Medicine community, I was taught that saliva values acted as tissue surrogates and best represented tissue uptake. Have you ever wondered why people tend to agree on what dose of estradiol patch to use, but recommendations and practices can differ by a factor of 10 when it comes to creams and gels? The confusion around hormone creams and gels is rooted in lab confusion.

In this video series I took 20 years of digging in the data and reading EVERY study that relates and organized it all for you. Some have said that saliva’s unique message in response to transdermal creams and gels is uniquely accurate. This is a myth, and in this series we look at each study used to defend or attack this position and set the record straight.

Warning: This is a complicated issue, and to do it justice, we had to look at a lot of studies and unpack them for you. There is an introduction video and a separate video that looks at the research for progesterone, estradiol (probably the most important most misunderstood), and testosterone. These videos are not short, but it takes some time to look at the data properly. If you really want to understand this issue, dive in! Lastly, this is an open conversation and an invitation to participate. If you think there is a study or set of data not properly considered in this debate, please let me know. This is not about winning a debate. It’s about continuously pursuing truth no matter where it leads!
