Stress is a social and biological reality of our humanity, especially during a season like the current COVID-19 pandemic. We often equate “stress” with stressful events, such as the loss of a family member, divorce, major life changes, etc. However, a physiological definition of stress and its effects are much more difficult to grasp. We do know stress takes a toll on the body in ways we are only beginning to understand. In fact, some researchers claim 75-90% of the diseases prevalent today in western society are somehow related to stress mechanisms of the body.
It is the daunting task of the clinician to determine which patients are overwhelmed by the effects of stress and develop individualized support protocols to help them regain their well-being.
